Yes Ive been a little bit slack and in holiday mode lately.

I hope your new years went well or was atleast better than ours, dealing with an upset teething 2year old at 11:30pm

Ive done a couple of little rides lately.. ok so semi little, Ive finally managed to get up into the trails along the top of the Belmont regional park.

check out my 30km loop ride

This one takes the trail up the top of our hill, along the ridgelines and up to belmont road, past the airstrip then down to Stratton street, from there I had the options of doing the Belmont Trig or going down via the road to the Korokoro dam trail, for this trip I took the down route but I plan on making this ride into my once a week “long” trip to work and including the trig.

Back to work tomorrow so I may just have to get up early and do this… if I do I promise a better ride report and some photos :)

How has everyone elses rides been?

cheers

Sam

Enjoy the reast of your day, go for a hoon up Makara I bet its sweet as up there today

Sam

Let me start by saying, there are many other things I should be doing right now but for one reason or another im just not. Some of those things include, cleaning my chain, swapping my grips over, cleaning out my ride bag, fixing my CV up, riding?

But nope… Im sitting at the computer desk, grinding up some coffee… scratch that, its 4 mins later and im now drinking coffee… I wish you could share smells via the internet because this smells mighty flippin good.

Moving right along, So Ben and I made a plan about 2 weeks ago that when off work before xmas we were going to do a Karapoti training/scouting mission. We were to do the full 50km loop at a slow pace to gauge the event etc… It turns out Wellington was not on our side, we had rain for the last 6 days in a row… the entire track would have been one big mudbog.

We decided that despite the rain and wind we would still ride however opting for some trails a little more groomed and suited to wet weather riding, This being Makara Peak Mountain Bike Park. So after a morning of mucking about fixing up bike bits, having coffee and generally talking rubbish before heading off we finally arrived at the carpark.

We decided we would do 3 laps of our version of the grand loop, well that was the idea anyway. So basically… up Koru, Sally Alley, Missing Link, Aratihi and down Northface, Ridgeline extention and home via Swig/Starfish.

Ben managed to keep a good pace for the first 3/4 of the climb however I think he got a little bored and after being told by me to go for gold he drove on ahead at his own super-fast lighting pace. We hit the cloud line around the halfway point on Aratihi and visibility was limited to about 20 meters from about this point on, there was so much mud/dirt/fog my glasses were doing more harm than good and it was raining hard on and off.

I finally broke out the top of Aratihi into the extreme wind that many Makara Peak riders know all too well, almost blowing me off my bike… I locate Ben, Leaning up against a small hill sheltered from the wind. After a quick nod to indicate all is well he is off again for the last little climb up the 4wd track and down the other side to the entrance of NorthFace.

I arrive at NorthFace again being almost blown off my bike, we take a quick 30 seconds to comment “farrrrk its windy” or something similar to that. Ben offers to take the point and off we go… the downhill is pretty slippery and with Northface still being quite a new trail its not quite well drained or hardpacked yet so making for a challange in some places, as per the norm I managed to say on Bens tail prettymuch the whole way down.

We promptly cleaned up that one then did the short climb back up and over to Ridgeline Extention however on the way back down to the start of the trail I completely overshot the entrance and had to hop off and turn around. By the time I got to the start of the short .8 km trial Ben was out of sight so I attempted to ride hard to catch him, I think this only made things worse as I some how managed to screw up every single corner/tree root/rock for the first 1/3 of the trail.

This made me a little angry at myself but I somehow decided that I just needed to sort my shit out and get on with it, this worked because by the time the trail got to that bit… yaknow the really rocky slight left hand turn part before the switchback then down toward the small jump? I had caught upto Ben and was right on his tail again, after the BBQ table we shot down to the end, Ben having a small slip along the way.

As we entered the little link track between RL ext and Swig I asked if I could take point for Swig/Starfish… I just LOVE that trail. I burned off ahead at the start of the trail and dont think Ben saw me from the first corner onwards, I rode prettymuch like it was dry and hammered my way to the end. Ben arrived at the carpark some 30-40 seconds later.

So after that one lap things were pretty well covered in mud, Example one: my bike

Example two, Me:

Example three, meet Ben and his bike! :

After a quick bathroom/snack/chat stop we took off for lap 2, same route as last time and I went at much the same pace, we got about 2/3 of the way up Koru and Ben stopped… there was something not quite right with his forks… we both haad a quick look over them but could not decide exactly what was up, they were kinda sticking on the way back up but not compressing nicely either… almost like there was not enough air in them? or something? We had a chat and decided we would finish off Koru then take the bike down the the local bike shop Mud’s Cycles. At the top of Koru Ben opted for the slower/more laidback route of lazy fern and I got to do my favorite Swig/Starfish.

When Ben finally arrived at the bottom we shot off down to Muds to borrow a shock pump and get their opinion on the issue, unfortunately this didnt help much as the shocks had prettymuch the right amount of air and the guy at the shop just wanted to send them away to be rebuilt!!! So at that point we called it a day and packed up to go home and get dry.

That was pretty-much it for yesterday (bikewise) other than going to Bicycle to pick up some valves but getting the wrong ones.

So post finished, my bike still needs sorting out and its now 10pm, im just going to go to bed because I feel grumpy.

Later gaters

p.s.

Im just going to place this here

On the same basis as the bike check, this is a rider check… a little bit about me, why I ride and what im riding for.

A few quick stats

Name: Sam N

Age: 25

Height: 182cm

Weight: still too much

Ok, so I was born and grew up in Napier on the east coast of New Zealand

Napier is a pretty sweet place to grow up, loads of beaches and nice weather and long hot summers.

I first started riding at around the age of 4 or 5, I remember I had a green? bike with training wheels and those foam protectors on the bars/stem area.

As i grew up I got a mountain bike at some age and did the occasional dirt trail with a couple of friends. I also started road riding in my early years at High School, I rode with the local rodie club called the Ramblers.

At the time I was the local milkboy so saved and paid off a new (second hand) bike, I bought the best spec I could afford on my wage.. I remember the bike cost me $600, I also wanted to upgrade to modern shifter/brake leavers so the nice guys at the bike shop hooked me up with a set of second hand 105 shifters for a mean deal… I hope.

The bike iteslf was a Bauer… I dont recall the model name but the 2 things I remember about it were that it had full 105… and the frame was… pink… Yes that’s right I rode a pink bike… but hey that’s all I could afford.

So I raced with the locals for a few years but moved away from riding after a while in favor of more social life I recall.

Moving on a few years, I finished High School at 16 and did a few odd jobs before moving to Wellington and starting work in the IT sector. A few jobs later I now work for one of New Zealands largest NZ owned IT providers as an engineer type person working with vMware/SAN’s etc…

I now live in Lower Hutt with my family and enjoy riding on a causal basis with a few friends, I also commute on my fixie to work as much as possible to keep up the general fitness. I dont mind road riding but really dont think its a sport I would like to get back into, I love the outdoors but being on the road is not quite enough for me I just get this feeling as soon as I hit a dirt trail or see the trees way above me covering the way almost calling my name, so for that reason I love to get out mountain biking.

The silence of the trails, the Cicadas, the sound of the birds, the dry leaves crunching under the weight of my fat a$$, the swarm of angry bee’s knowin as the freewheel on my hope pro2 rear hub… its all why I like offroad.

So whats next, well after doing the Karapoti 20km race earlier this year I fell in love and signed up to do the 50km race in March next year, so im training for that. Started off with a bit of weightloss by doing our own version of weight watchers and have lost 15 KG, then the rides to work to build general fitness, some longer XC mountain bike rides in the weekends too, Im supposed to be hitting the full Karapoti course tomorrow but we have just had about 5 days of rain so im not sure if we will quite do Karapoti at this stage. A few more training rides over the xmas break will help too.

As the big day gets closer im going to need to start doing some epic rides, 3-4 hours of hill work etc… so we will see how that all goes.

As well as Karapoti the weightloss will continue and im going to start going to the gym to build some muscle. There are other MTB races/events I want to do too such as the single speed nationals in Napier on ANZAC weekend and maybe the PNP series in the new year?

On a more personal basis we are looking to get married some time soon so need to make some decisions around that… Also have 2 kids so that keeps us pretty busy at home running around after the monkeys!

or dinosaurs as it may be

Thats probably it for now

Sam

Ok, so im gonna do a couple of these posts over the next week or so. Each one is going to detail one of my bikes  so you can get an idea of what I ride/have and so I can see your thoughts and hear feedback regarding the bikes if you have any.

The first bike I want to talk about it probably the one I spend the most time on and get the most KM’s out of at the moment, its my “Daily” or commuter type bike.

My ride to work is around 18km and consists of a 1km downhill run onto the motorway then a long stretch through the hutt and along the waterfront motorway finally shooting through Thorndon into the CBD. For this very task I chose to build a bike that would be comfortable enough and would assist me with building the fitness I need for my mountain biking.

Originally I started riding into work on one of my other mountain bikes but wanted to get something a little more efficient and faster for road use… some how Ive ended up riding a fixed gear bike... so without further rubbish talk from me here she is:

The frame is a 200x? model Avanti Pista Pro “track” bike

what is a track bike you ask… well lets ask Mr Wikipedia

the setup is as follows

Frame: Avanti Pista Pro

Fork: Carbono carbon

Cranks: unknown black SS ones

Brake: front only tektro

Bars: Bullhorn, unknown brand

Bartape: Brookes? genuine leather

Front Wheel: Aerospoke black carbon-composite 5spoke – unknown front tyre, pretty bombproof

Rear Wheel: Low flange flip-flop hub on alexrims 500 rim – armadillo rear tyre

Seat: specialized

Chain: gold halflink KMC

Gear Ratio: 46-17

So why I chose a fixed gear bike was initially because I loved the concept and simplicity of it all, there are minimal parts and the concept of being in complete control of the bike anywhere within the pedal stroke felt pretty goood. I guessed it would also be quite helpful in building up those much needed leg muscles for hill climbing having the ratio I do.

Its a pretty sweet rig im quite happy with it but now 100% sure where to take it next… I have a slightly more aggressive looking fork to go on it in the next few weeks and I would ideally like to upgrade the rear wheel at some point but im not sure in what direction i would like to go there… maybe a matching aerospoke? campy shamal? rev-x with freewheel? some deepdish rim ? looking for suggestions here… ideally I think I want to stay fixie but I dont want to spend a million bucks.

Check out the local fixed gear blog Dame Truth im yet to get a chance to ride with these guys but they seem pretty chur.

Thats it for tonight, Let me know your thoughts on the bike… ideas going forward…thoughts on fixies… suggestions for alternate commuters?

Sam

Ok, so its now Tuesday but I call this Sunday night revisited as for the last 2 days ive been wanting to go back up there with my phone/gps and a bit more light for a look around….

Tonight was supposed to be Baileys prize-giving for school, Jane and I were supposed to go along and the Grandparents were supposed to come over and look after Ella. However Jane has been feeling a but rubbish for the last couple of days so roles were a little reversed, I came home from work Jane had made dinner :) so had dinner then  bathed Ella… The Grandparents showed up to pick Bailey up and took him off to his prize-giving while I decided to stay behind to help Jane get Ella ready for bed etc. After Ella was in bed there was not much for me to do… well i say that but really there is a list… (see bottom of post)

So after a quick chat with Jane I geared up and took off with a bit of extra daylight left to try and get a good look of the trails I had found.

A quick hoon up the road takes you to the start of the dirt trail, this is the gate/park entrance

After 10-15 mins of climbing I knew I wouldn’t be going far tonight, there was low cloud and I wouldn’t be able to see the right way to go.

This was taken just below the cloud line before i rode up into it

This one you can see Upper Hutt way down the back there

So I kept climbing just incase there was something worth seeing right from the top, I popped out of this trail and onto the 4WD track into nothing but cloud.

Climbing a bit further visibility became very bad, I got all the way to the top around sunset and got another sunset photo like the one on sunday night… However this one has a significant amount of less sunset

I had a wee bit of a look around up there to make sure I was not missing any clearly marked tracks…trying to find “speedys” or anything else. After 10 mins of avoiding rocks and cowpoo I decided to go back down the way I came.

A nice quick hoon down and an almost ooopsie on the damp clay and I was back on the road to home…

I took a couple of quick “hipstermatic” shots of my bike and new camel-back when I got home, Ill do a bike spec post later on so you know what I ride.

So thats almost it, you can also check out the GPS from my ride thanks to the endomondo application for iPhone right …. Here…. Endomondo Mountain biking Workout.

p.s.

Here are some of the things i probably should have done rather than go riding

  • tidy the house
  • fold washing
  • clean the garage
  • wash my motorbike
  • wash my MTB
  • work on the “project”
  • log into work and fix up the change request I put in yesterday that needs a little more work
  • iron workshirts :S

My salt and pepper shakers. A gift from a friend

Chris recently went over to Canada and came back via the lego store with these cool guys for me :D

Not quite bike related but i needed to be able to test the function of posting a photo from my iPhone

Spoted bike

Spotted this sweet looking rig the other day, it belongs to a local bike courier. Chris pointed out the brake leaver is on the wrong side so guessing rider is American?

Either way, I’m a fan… The cranks/chainring look chur

a sunday night ride

I decided lateish last-night that i would go for a bit of a hoon.
I’d seen a few trails on a website and have spoken to some people about them so wanted to check them out.
Supposedly there was a trail that went from the top of my hill, across the ridgeline and down the ridgeline of the next suburb over.

So i left the house around 8pm, the sun was still out but not up too high.
I figured i had about 1.5 hours of sunlight left and the trail shouldn’t take that long… should it??

So i left the house and rode up the hill to i got to the entrance of the Belmont regional park, A quick road based climb not too steep.
I then jumped the fence and got onto the trail, it looked about wide enough for a 4wheeler but nothing more, in places quite overgrown and a fair amount of horse poo laying about. It didnt look like a trail used much anymore but iwas fairly hard packed clay type soil and the trail was pretty well dug in… maybe used by dirtbikes a bit?
Anyway i followed the trail up the climb was pretty fair with a few switchbacks that were a little steep/rutted.
I came out onto what appeared to be a 4wd track, i later learned this comes from the dry creek quary, it was very steep in places and looks pretty recently dug up with large ruts making the climb a grannygear area.

I got out of that as fast as i could and found myself on a grassy area, up the hill further I could see 2 guys on bikes just stopping and getting off so I powered my way up to what appeared to be the top.
Once i got there i found out i was up the top of bolder hill and these guys had come up to watch the sunset, that i just missed..
So I started off going down the other side heading towards what i thought would take me to Belmont hill, stopping at the ridgeline to take this

The last bit of the sun setting just as I left boulder hill

so I took off down what I thought would be the shortish decent back town to the Belmont path, rather rutty and grassy with a fair amount of cow-poo scattered about… after a while I found a bit of a trail marked out by some white poles with an orange tag on the top… followed this for about 30 mins or so getting further and further along the trail feeling like I might be going too far but thinking how hard can it be all I need to do to get home is go down right? It then started getting dark… quite dark quite fast…

I came to a bit of a stream that looked like it had a trail running next to it but I really couldn’t see far enough to tell so I kept going along the trail I was on, more of a 4WD track now and looked to be farmland of some type, it climbed up a hill for 10 mins then came across a gate, it was so dark the photo I took was just blackness… turns out I was at the Belmont Pony Club

I found my way to the road and cranked on down the hill as fast as I could, finally getting home just after 10pm… an interesting ride.

Ill do it agian later this week but got out with a bit more sunlight and take my GPS.
